Brilliant Berwick – A Great Day Out

If you fancy doing something different this autumn why not head over to England’s most Northern town and visit Berwick-Upon-Tweed. This border town is brimming with fascinating history and so much to see and do.

Take a trip through history

Berwick Town Guard WallDue to the fact that Berwick is a border town the history here is extremely rich, bloody and exciting. Many battles took place here between the English and the Scots who were trying to claim these border towns as their own.

Because there was so much fighting taking place there has to be security measures and so this is where Berwick Castle, the Main Guard and Ramparts came into the equation.

These fortifications are still present today and, although various battles have had an impact on them a lot of the areas remain fully intact.

Berwick is recognised as one of the most important fortified towns in Europe and any history lovers out there will be in their element learning of all the chaos that this town suffered many years ago.

Today you are able to walk the entire circuit of this wonderful towns fortifications and get an idea how the people would have lived and how the battles would have gone.

The Maltings Theatre and Cinema

Maltings Theatre & CinemaIf you’re into your culture then Berwick is home to the amazing Maltings theatre and Cinema which is a delightful hidden gem.

Here you can experience a vast range of diverse acts, whether it be music, comedy, theatre or cinema. There are over 500 live events and workshops each year so you will be sure to find something that peaks your interest.

The building itself is beautiful. It was built in the ruins of an early 19th Century Maltings and consists of five wonderful floors.

Venture inside the enormous house for a tour of the vastly beautiful rooms within. Don’t worry about the kids getting bored as there is an exciting teddy trail for them to take part in.

Once you’ve explored every nook and cranny of the inside of the house you can enjoy a tranquil walk around the grounds which are alive with colour in the autumn months. Feel free to bring your four-legged-friend too as dogs are more than welcome here.
