Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum

One point of interest that is great for all the family is the wonderful exhibition at the Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum.

This incredible reconstruction of the Roman fort lies above the entrance to the River Tyne. Back in the day this place guarded the main sea route to Hadrian’s Wall making it a very important stronghold.

Step into history

RomansWhen you delve into the Roman fort here in South Shields you will feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine. The reconstructed buildings carry an amazing resemblance to what they would have looked like when first built.

You can come inside the Arbeia Roman fort and wander around the different buildings discovering so much about what would have gone on here.

Take a look at the Commanding Officer’s house which is array with exciting artefacts and then head over to the soldier’s barrack block to see how they would have passed the time whilst waiting for an attack.

No matter what time of year it is there will be some event taking place that helps to paint an even more vivid picture for you. From Gladiator battles to Falconry displays all the way to elaborate storytelling, there will definitely be something that interests you.

Head down to the Roman fort in South Shields on the 10th September for an event called ‘What did the Romans do for us?’ Or head over there on the 24th September for ‘Meet the Roman Neighbours’. You will enjoy an array of performers and entertainers so be sure to visit, learn and have a good time with all the family.

Opening times throughout the year may vary, but their current opening times are:

Monday – Friday 10am until 5pm
Saturday 11am until 4pm
Sunday 1pm until 4pm
